October 10 at 1:43 PM  Alaska  Senator Dan Sullivan  I recently met with the Veterans’ Administration Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs to discuss a variety of Alaska issues, including a state veteran cemetery grant application for the community of Metlakatla on Annette Island.  Like many, I was extremely pleased to hear that after a competitive application process, their application is on the priority list for funding as early as next year. This project has been a priority of mine as a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, as well as for the community of Metlakatla. I’m thrilled to see it move one step closer toward reality. As I have highlighted before, Alaska Native veterans serve in our Armed Forces at rates greater than other ethnic group in the country—this cemetery will serve as a proper reminder of their sacrifice and dedication to this great country.

October 10 at 3:45 PM  Alaska  Congressman Don Young  Trump signs bills banning drug pricing 'gag clauses'  President Trump on Wednesday signed two bills banning "gag clauses" that keep patients in the dark about how to save money on prescription drugs.  President Trump signed two bills into law today that I supported - S. 2553 the "Know the Lowest Price Act" and S. 2554 the "Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act". Both pieces of legislation will allow pharmacists to tell customers when they can save money - which is pivotal in lowering the health care costs thousands of Alaskans struggle with on a day-to-day basis. Today's hearing on ballot measure 1 was heavily attended by proponents of both sides of the issue.

The initiative/referendum process was intentionally included in Alaska's Constitution to provide an additional avenue for Alaskans to impact public policy. However, the legislative process remains the primary means for making law in Alaska.

There is a reason the legislative bill this initiative is modeled on never moved out its committee of first referral even though the sponsor of that bill was also the committee's chair.

In 2014, Alaskans passed legalized recreational marijuana. The harsh reality is that fixing the problems with that ballot measure consumed a massive amount of the Legislature's bandwidth for two years rather than focusing on our fiscal stability.

Similar to SB 91, ballot measure 1 is probably well intentioned. But, like the old saying goes, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions."

Like most Alaskans, I deeply value our salmon. If there is any real issue with protecting salmon habitat, then ballot measure 1 is the equivalent of swatting a fly with a sledgehammer--and all without the rigors and public testimony that accompanies the legislative process.

But a big one is the fleet of cars, trucks, buses, snowplows and lumbering red garbage trucks under local government control. 

They could cut a ton of carbon!

Next question: How much more in property taxes, that they will have to raise, are people willing to pay, to make it happen?
