The bill before us has a number of features that are very attractive to Alaskans. It lowers tax rates, doubles the child tax credit, and provides tax relief for many families by doubling the standard deduction. It promotes economic growth, employment, and investment by improving the tax code for corporations and small businesses. And it removes the tax penalty for those who do not wish to purchase health insurance that they cannot afford or that offers little value to them.

Of course, the bill also includes a title that I am proud to have written, to open a small portion of the non-wilderness 1002 Area in ANWR in northeast Alaska to responsible energy production.

We still have work to do on this legislation and I look forward to the debate on the Senate floor and my colleagues’ ideas to further improve it.

Outside of the tax legislation, we must enact healthcare reforms to help stabilize the individual market. The Alexander-Murray bill helps to accomplish that, and as an original cosponsor of that effort, I will continue to encourage the President and my colleagues to act swiftly on it.

Thanks to ANWR being added to the tax reform, she has no choice but support it happening

If you hear I’ve attended or met with someone with whom I am not politically aligned, or you see a photo of me with someone you despise, I’d like to ask a favor of you. Please don’t assume I’m moving over to the dark side, or if you’re at the other end of the political spectrum: that I’ve joined you.

I refuse to be governed by what other people think.

I strive to be a champion of the people and work towards what’s in their best interest as per the constitution. If that means I need to sit down with someone on a topic to hear them and convey what I think AND work toward consensus on an issue with them, I’m going to do it (mind you, without forsaking my conservative values).

I may even show up at functions where others are showing up because they support a particular person, but I won’t be there for that reason. I am stating here and now, on the social media public record, when I attend a function, a meeting, a gathering, please make no assumptions; please do not assume that I am aligned with whomever is the target of attention at the event. I will be there because I want to hear what that particular person has to say, and I want that particular person to hear what I have to say. I likely will want to listen closely, find whatever points of agreement I can, and then convince them as to the direction, the policies, the steps Alaska needs to take.

In short, if you learn I’m connecting with someone you dislike (or adore), please don’t assume I’ve changed my principles. I guess what I’m really saying is please trust me. I am working on your behalf, Alaskans, every chance I get.

Oh, to make sure there’s no confusion, I am aligned with the little petunia in this picture - my granddaughter!
