Governor Walker called for a 4th special session of the State
Legislature in October. The stated purpose of the session was to
pass SB-54, a bill intent upon ‘fixing’ certain parts of the SB-91
omnibus crime bill. SB-91 was passed into law in 2016, and was set to be
implemented in three phases, the last of which is scheduled to be
enacted in January, 2018.
The governor has also put before the special session a proposal
for the institution of a payroll tax. This tax, if enacted into law,
would have a cap of $2,200.00 per wage earner, and is estimated by the
Alaska Department of Revenue to have the potential of bringing in
between $300 - $325 million dollars annually.
As your representative in the House, I have insisted that these
proposals get the proper review and investigation necessary to assuring
that only sound, reasonable, and necessary legislation is passed. That
is why I registered my strong objection to having SB-54 removed from
consideration by the House Committee on State Affairs, that is why I
have spoken up on the House floor in favor of repealing SB 91, and that
is why I will be voting NO to the governor’s payroll tax proposal.
Let’s talk about SB-54. Let me assure the residents of the Palmer area,
I have heard your calls for action on crime. It is clear criminal
activity began to spike upward prior to the activation of SB-91, and the
response was to enact legislation that actually reduced the penalties
for just the types of crime we are experiencing now. This is not
acceptable, and I will vote against any bill that fails to decisively
fix this problem. Ultimately, I believe SB-91 should be replaced with
statutes that more effectively target crime and have no loopholes.
Let’s talk about the payroll tax. My stance on taxes has always been
clear. Simply taxing away government inefficiency is not the answer. The
state must get its financial house in order, starting with assessing
real needs versus wants, and outsourcing projects to our private sector
to grow the economy. Until this happens, I will never support any plan
that makes Alaskans bail out the government. |

The telecom company said Friday that all its employees at the time of
the theft were affected.
GCI employees were notified about the theft Friday.
Crooks now have more SSN and personnel information from theft this year,

Alaska Senate adjourns session after passing crime bill The
Alaska Senate set aside constitutional concerns and approved the crime
bill Friday, but sidestepped taxes when ending the special legislative
session.
The Alaska Senate passed the crime bill and adjourned this afternoon.

Kodiak Island Alaska's Novarupta-Katmai explosion was the
largest of the 20th century.
A few times every year, ash from the 105-year-old eruption is carried by
the winds toward Kodiak, said a weather service meteorologist.
This is one of the finest examples of Climate Change/Global
Warming/Global Cooling that produced more change in three days then the
entire industrial world did over the last year.
Plus here we are a 105 years later and it still is causing global
changes on our planet.
